It is Saturday nite. I'm waiting for the status update from Don about Joanne. I don't get any. So I call to see how the hospital admission went. And it didn't go as expected.
Upon admission, Joanne underwent a chest X-ray. Which showed a very large mass on her lungs. Yes, it is cancer. Now everyone knows that she has smoked for 60 years. It is not surprising, but it's still not the type of news you want to hear when you think all she is getting admitted for is complications with pneumonia due to her heart murmur.
She underwent a bronchoscopy Sunday morning that took a biopsy of the lung mass. Now we are waiting for the pathology results. Possibly late Monday, or Tuesday we will know further. I was able to speak with the oncologist Sunday who explained the type of results that we might get. There is apparently "good" cancer, and "bad" cancer. The "good" cancer is called lymphoma, and it's very treatable with a reasonable outcome of success. The "bad" cancer is called small cell cancer, and it is very aggressive. If it is the "bad" cancer, then we will know what kind of treatment there will be. Wednesday, I assume I will be discussing with my family the options available to us.
Needless to say, I had a really bad weekend. So please keep Joanne in your thoughts & prayers. We need it.
