If you've ever had the chance to come visit me when I lived in Birmingham, AL I most likely took you on a whirlwind foodie tour. One of the places I would have taken you was to Zoe's restuarant. A little hole in the wall in Homewood that served the most excellent greek salad: shredded cabbage with feta & homemade vinaigrette (Zoe's secret sauce). Fabuloso.
After my conversation with Michelle last night who revisited Bham and saw the wonders of its growth, we relived the foodie tour from 10 years ago.
~I ate my first sushi in Bham at a late night $1 sushi bar
~My first experience of Thai food at Surin West. It's still in the same location 10 years later. I have never found the same pad thai anywhere else.
~The Original Pancake House located just outside my front door in 5 Points South. We have one here in Austin just down Parmer which I am reluctant to go to for fear of it not living up to the Bham standards I remembered.
~Johnny Rockets. That weird egg salad sandwich craving I had that I tried to replicate a 2 weeks ago. I failed. Still have that craving.
~Sweet Tea. Oh how I had to give you up due to my blood sugar issues. The highs & lows you put me through just weren't worth it.
And my old adage, the more things change, the more they stay the same? Well at www.zoeskitchen.com you can see the
MAJOR changes that have taken place. Franchising, numerous locations, Zoe's chunky hunky son, and all new logo and marketing. But the one thing I bet hasn't changed is her Greek Salad recipe. It's divine.
