1. Pie. How do you begin to eat it? Do you look at it like I do as art form, the perfect triangular piece of confection. Okay, so it's not an equilateral triangle (3 sides equal for those who've forgotten geometry), but when it's on your plate, do you start at the tip or at the back of the pie and scoop up crust?
2. I've become resentful of family disturbances that interrupt the only time to myself these days - you know it as the weekend. I've come to know it as that "extra day to catch up on work". However this weekend was letter writing practice to deal with estate issues. I compose letters in modified block format.
3. Grammys. I appreciate the recognition of the music that has shaped and influenced our lives. But get Kanye West off the stage please and give me more musicians who can play instruments. Your voice doesn't count unless you're Andrea Bocelli.
4. Driving to San Antonio and back made me realize that if I spent more time on the road I might be dead. Or kill someone. I could really use my car as a lethal weapon. I call it survival of the fittest, maybe even defensive driving.
5. Austin has got to be the priciest in airfare in the country. Can someone please explain to me the elitist attitude airlines have about flying into & out of this city? I could fly out of San Antonio for about $100 less, but I'd have to drive there and could kill or get killed on I-35.

In re pie:
It depends on the crust.
If it's a typical pie crust (like Loretta Lynn makes with Crisco), then I definitely start at the point of the pie triangle and work my way back. I do not usually eat the pie crust, unless I am in the presence of the pie maven who baked the pie. While I worship Loretta, I don't care for this type of crust.
On the other hand, if it's a non-Loretta crust of just about any type (pressed cookie crumbs, extra buttery and crunchy, etc.), I may be tempted to start on the round edge of the pie just so I can taste the crust goodness first.
When the crust is really good, I tend to think of the filling as the peas and lima beans part of the pie. The filling HAS to be eaten first, just like peas and lima beans, in order to get to the good stuff.
I have contemplated this issue for many, many years.
My favorite pies? Why thank you for asking! Apple (particularly with a pie crust cover or a crumble cover), Chocolate Cream, and Key Lime.
And if I may take a moment to address Key Lime pie bakers everywhere: Key Limes are small, round fruits with a yellow meat. Key Lime juice is more yellow than green. So, if your Key Lime pie is GREEN, then please stop using Jello and/or food coloring. And please, for pity sake, don't put a regular lime twist on top of an authentic Key Lime pie. I mean, what's the point of that??
Thank you Adrienne for once again coming up with such a bracing and informative topic: pie.
