It wasn't just for the BBQ

Talk about getting involved in the community. Today was the BBQ benefit for Dot's restaurant that was burned down last week.

In case you haven't been listening to the Austin news, Dot's was a homestyle cookin' type place that was destroyed in a fire. She was a cash-basis only type establishment and had let her insurance lapse. Her place reminded me of the Deep South where you could get a homecooked meal that was a "meat and two" - A main dish like chicken fried steak with two sides (give me fried okra and mac & cheese) MMMM...MMMMMMM.

A few of my co-workers and I went out to Dot's at 11:50. By 1:30, we had our 15 plates to take back to the office. Thanks to everyone - we contributed $138 - an average of $9.20 per plate. I'll be interested to know how much they raised because there were tons of people who showed up to support Dot.

And let me tell ya....LOTS of politickin' goin on. Not only was News 8 Austin, KVUE, & Fox News out in full force, we got to see some Austin celebrities, like Mayor Will Wynn & Mark Strama who's running for my district's State Rep. By the way - he's REAL cute - a greek looking hottie who happens to be single (no wedding band). But don't worry Jimmy - I still like you best.

Anyway - even though it was hot and muggy standing in line for so long, it was worth it. Because I know that if a Chili's restaurant burned down, you wouldn't see this type of support. And give me a Mom & Pop restaurant ANY DAY. I prefer eating out at the local places before visiting a corporate restaurant.
