[Another] Book Review

I did a book swap with a co-worker and sent her The Kite Runner (voted my fave book of 2004), and she sent Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia, by Jean Sasson.

I got this book Friday, and had it read on Saturday night. I stayed up until 1am Friday, and 2am Saturday to read it - it was that good! This story portrays the Saudi Arabian women's plight and one privileged woman's desire to make changes on women's rights and liberties. And while I was truly horrified at some of the incidents, and how she endured her culture's treatment of women, I felt that she was still naive in her ways in understanding in how to create change. And she admitted to this. She felt like her legacy would be to change with her children's generation. There have been 2 more books written from this first book, and I am contemplating reading them.

The first book was more of a story rather than an action of change. And I think my view is a bit naive if I think that one woman could preempt change within a generation or culture so quickly. So I am curious to know in the next books how the next generation has been affected.

I read that book! In fact I gave Lauren the series. It was great! I read it because I was working, at the time, for a Middle Eastern (Palestinian)Boss. I wondered if this would give me some insight on how to handle/deal with him. It lent alot of insight into the mind of the Middle Eastern man and what they typically expect from women. All the women in that office read the book too-it was like our Employee Handbook!
