So I've taken a poll. And the people I've actually asked at work, as well as who has responded to my blog have provided me with the info I needed about "knocking on wood."
Only 3 of the 10 (Keith, Tari, Norma, Virgil, Frank, Louis, Ziv, Kristen, James, Laurel) people I polled about "knocking on wood" actually had heard "knock wood". And it is suprisingly used more than I thought. Just check out Steph's blog: http://home.austin.rr.com/theellistrator/2005/03/she-started-it.html
But Kristen said it best. And I was waiting patiently for her answer because I was thinking it was more of a midwestern saying and that she would tell me that she says "knock wood". But, apparently not:
The answer is knock ON wood!!!! Haven't you ever heard the song that goes something like "ya gotta knock, knock, knock on wood" -- great, now I can't get that song out of my mind! Thanks for the earworm!!! If you google both, there's only 23,500 references to "knock wood" and 307,000 to "knock on wood". Hope that clears it up for you!
And Frank gave me more of a trivia insight. Apparently the British say "touch wood". Now you'd better get this in the right context, or you might get into trouble!
