On my way to see Sweet T this weekend, I took a different route around Houston this time. Instead of taking 610 South, towards the Galleria and that Hwy 59 cluster and on towards Mykawa Road where I used to go visit Memaw & Papaw, I decided instead to take the 610 North side that Mapquest suggested.
This is the side of 610 that takes you over the Ship Channel. And it's been quite some time since I've been on that side of town. I almost forgot that Houston has a Port. I remember the Ship Channel Bridge being this giant, rickety contraption that shuttled you over the Ship Channel. But now, it's this 8-lane massive structure that bypasses the dirty, sleazy, seamy, industrial side of the Port.
As I'm making my way across, I look off to my right, and there's the downtown skyline looming in the horizon. And I get that same gut feeling I used to get 10 years ago when I moved to Galveston....HOME. Not that I have any interest in living in Houston - it's way too much crowded with too many people for me to handle on a daily basis. But H-town will always sorta be my hometown.
